World, a global human-centered financial and identity network, has officially launched its services in the Philippines, targeting the country's digitally savvy population and emerging middle class. This rollout introduces World ID, a free and secure digital identity system designed to help Filipinos verify their humanness online, combat bots, misinformation, and deepfakes, and manage AI tools more effectively.
Initially, World ID Orb verifications are being piloted in select cities within Bulacan province, near Manila, with plans for nationwide availability. The World ID system allows users to anonymously prove their identity while maintaining privacy through advanced technologies like zero-knowledge proofs and Anonymized Multi-Party Computation. Verified participants join a network of over 23 million users globally, including 11 million verified humans.
The Philippines' high social media usage—96.2% of internet users aged 16-64 use Facebook monthly—and rapid AI adoption (86% of knowledge workers use AI in workflows) underscore the need for tools like World ID. The country has also faced a sharp rise in deepfake-related identity fraud (4,500% increase between 2022 and 2023) and bot-driven misinformation, particularly as it approaches its May midterm elections.
Filipinos can access World’s services by downloading the World App and verifying their identity using the Orb device. Benefits include access to WLD tokens (subject to eligibility restrictions), a digital wallet, and Mini Apps. Privacy remains a core focus; verification data is stored only on users’ devices and not shared with third parties.
This launch aligns with the Filipino cultural value of bayanihan (community spirit) by fostering safer online environments. It also supports the country's growing economy and technology sector by addressing challenges posed by AI misuse and cybercrime.
