OpenAI tests new Canvas features in ongoing experiments

OpenAI is exploring the ability to create canvases directly from the prompt area. A recent experiment introduces a new button that lets users open pasted content from the prompt area into the canvas view. This view can also be expanded to full screen within the side sheet, enabling users to immediately start working with the provided content without waiting for ChatGPT to process it first.

This improvement could significantly enhance the speed of canvas creation. For instance, users may soon be able to quickly refine existing text or code. It remains to be seen if, in the future, it will be possible to open multiple canvases simultaneously for different files, but that prospect is intriguing.

Several additional enhancements to canvases are anticipated. One focus is on rendering capabilities, akin to cloud artifacts, such as the ability to render React pages or SVGs. While canvas creation is not yet publicly available on mobile and desktop apps, the functionality is already in development and operational in some cases.

Another experiment reported earlier consolidates tool usage under a single button, labeled “All Tools”, allowing the 4o model to handle tasks like image generation and canvas creation seamlessly. This feature has reportedly begun rolling out to a limited number of users.

It is likely that OpenAI will announce ChatGPT canvas improvements during the ongoing 12 Days of OpenAI event. With 10 days remaining, these enhancements are a strong candidate for one of the announcements.
