OpenAI has launched GPT-6.1 Terra, a fast, efficient model combining detailed visual reasoning, precise computer use, and clearer, more natural writing. OpenAI calls it a major step up from GPT-5.6 Terra and says it excels at proposals, technical drawings, forms, and video editing.
On Agents' Last Exam, OpenAI reports that Terra at medium reasoning scores 15 percentage points above GPT-5.6 Terra at about one-third the cost, while matching GPT-6 Astra at one-tenth the price per token. At maximum effort, OpenAI says Terra is over three times as token efficient as Claude Opus 5.5 and one-fourth its price per token, producing about nine times lower cost per task. OpenAI also says Terra completes tasks more than three times faster than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.

OpenAI says Terra outperforms GPT-5.6 Terra on MMMU-Pro at every reasoning setting and nearly matches GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol at lower cost. On OSWorld 2.1, medium-effort Terra exceeds GPT-5.6 Terra's best score at a fraction of the cost per task.
On OpenAI's internal error-inducing prompt benchmark, Terra's low-effort error rate fell to 16.7% from 53.6% for GPT-5.6 Terra. At maximum effort it reached 4.3%, an 18-percentage-point reduction that nearly matches GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol. OpenAI reports that Terra solves 50.3% of Terminal-Bench 4.0 tasks at maximum effort, versus GPT-5.6 Terra's published 21.5%. OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra remain preferable for the most complex coding work.

OpenAI says Terra reaches the Critical cybersecurity threshold under its Preparedness Framework and retains GPT-6 Astra protections. It also reports closer scope adherence, more honest disclosure of limitations and blockers than GPT-5.6 Terra, and resistance to prompt injection in tests. A system card accompanies the release.
GPT-6.1 Terra is now available to Plus, Pro, Enterprise, and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex. The API model ID is gpt-6.1-terra. Standard pricing is $1 per million input tokens, $0.05 per million cached input tokens, and $5 per million output tokens, 50% below GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol. OpenAI says the same usage allowance covers more tasks than GPT-5.6 Terra and substantially more than GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Astra.
