Google readies native image generation in Gemini ahead of possible I/O reveal

Google appears to be moving toward a public launch of native image generation inside Gemini. Internal work has stretched over many months, but recent activity—including a fresh round of model flags and backend updates—suggests the feature is nearly ready for external users.

New disclosures, discovered by Legit, now warn that only images for which a user holds rights should be uploaded or edited. This language aligns with the previously unearthed “Creative Partner” tool and hints that Google plans to fold rights-management guidance directly into the generation workflow.

A concrete timeline remains uncertain. With Google I/O scheduled for late May, the company may wait to showcase the capability on stage and flip the switch the same day. Some testers noticed the earlier Gemini image model disappearing from AI Studio in EU countries without any public explanation, reinforcing the idea that a refreshed variant is imminent, though not likely within the current week.

On the consumer side, Gemini is available as a free AI assistant that runs in standard browsers, through a dedicated Android app, and inside the Google app on iOS. It supports more than 40 languages, helps with writing, planning, coding, and everyday questions, and an optional Gemini Advanced subscription unlocks the Pro model for deeper conversational depth and early access to new features.
