After a big wave of recent releases for Gemini, Google is already preparing for their next move. Two big features have been spotted in development recently.
Canvas
The first one is called Canvas, and it has been in development for a while. However, now it seems that Gemini is getting new tools to operate with Canvases. Canvases will allow users to create documents or files with code, making it a feature similar to what ChatGPT offers.
Additionally, next to the recently added Deep Research button on the Composer menu, Google will introduce a new button for Canvas, enabling users to select and deselect these options as needed. Initially, the Canvas feature will only be available on Gemini 2.0 Flash and not on other models.
Video Generation
Besides that, something even more exciting is that Google is preparing video generation for Gemini. This means that Gemini will likely gain the ability to generate videos directly through its UI. It will most likely use Veo2, the video generation model that Google made available on VideoFX for trusted testers and some customers via API.
This would be a major addition to Gemini’s capabilities, as Veo2 is one of the best video generation models currently available. Moreover, the ability to create videos directly within a chat product is quite unique—so far, only Qwen has this feature. However, OpenAI is also planning to integrate Sora directly into ChatGPT eventually.

On a smaller note, event placeholders have been updated to include March 18 as a new date. However, it’s important to remember that these dates are tentative and usually indicate the general availability of certain features. The addition of a video generation placeholder in the code suggests that the feature could launch within one to four weeks, based on historical patterns. However, considering the scale of this feature, it’s still unclear how long it will take to arrive at Gemini in fact.
