Google Gemini gets major “Thinking” upgrades and free Deep Research

Google has announced significant updates to its Gemini app, introducing new capabilities across multiple features. These upgrades aim to enhance functionality, personalization, and accessibility for users worldwide.

This model now supports file uploads and features a 1 million token context window, enabling Gemini Advanced users to process and analyze large-scale information effectively. Additionally, Gemini's "Deep Research" feature has been enhanced with this model, allowing users to create detailed multi-page reports while providing real-time insights into its reasoning process. Deep Research is now available globally in 45+ languages, accessible for free a few times per month or with expanded access for Gemini Advanced users.

Another major addition is the experimental "Personalization" feature, which integrates Gemini with Google apps like Search to deliver tailored responses based on user activity. For instance, restaurant recommendations or travel advice can be customized using recent searches. Users retain control over their Search history and can disconnect it from Gemini anytime.

Gemini has also strengthened its integration with Google apps such as Calendar, Notes, Tasks, and Photos. This allows users to handle complex multi-app requests in a single prompt, such as planning grocery lists or creating itineraries based on photos. The ability to interact with Google Photos will be introduced in the coming weeks.

Lastly, "Gems," customizable AI experts tailored to specific tasks or topics, are now available for all users at no cost. These Gems can be created via the desktop "Gems manager," where users can upload files and define instructions for personalized assistance.
