Recent reverse engineering reports suggest that we might soon see new voices for ChatGPT. After the read-aloud button icon was updated, users noticed that the voice used for reading aloud became more natural and expressive. Additionally, there are indications that up to 8 new voices could become available in the future. Each of these voices has a unique codename. They are not yet officially accessible and are only available through reverse engineering.

It’s worth noting that if all existing voices were to be listed in the settings dropdown, they wouldn’t all fit on the screen. This could mean that ChatGPT UI might be updated, or we may not get all the new voices at once.

Another interesting feature of these new voices is their ability to express sounds more naturally, such as animal noises or other non-verbal sounds. Furthermore, they can convey or emphasize specific emotions when reading text that is bolded or italicized. However, it’s important to remember that these are still TTS (text-to-speech) voices and are likely unrelated to the advanced voice mode currently in its alpha phase.
